I doubt extremely that there will be a movie. If Clive is even thinking about it, it must be on extreme backburner. It's just nice to speculate however.

Actually, with how the 3rd book turned out, it was quite cinimatic. So i think Clive does want there to be a movie.

Just read a brief interview with CB on fearnet.com in which he said things are looking very optimistic for an Abarat movie! This makes me very happy!( If of course they do make a movie, it is made right.)

I'm a little late coming into this conversation, but I will be so glad if Disney doesn't have anything to do with the movie. Even though Abarat is sold as a teen/YA book, there are some very dark undertones. Disney would try to lighten it as much as they could, and Mater Motley would seem like just a weary old woman. Even though Disney did a good job for Tron, I just don't think they should have their hands on anything with a dark background or characters.
But on the discussion of how it should be made, I've seen independent and foreign films that were live action as well as animation and studio tricks. Mirror Mask is one, unfortunately I have ADD and trying to remember all of them off the top of my head is hard, but it would be kind of how they made Paul. The person who is playing the animation is there to interact with the actors, but he's in one of those animation suits with the facial reader attached to him. So he would be essentially playing the character. Characters like John Mischief would be ideal for this. Watch the making of Paul to get what I'm trying to explain.
I saw someone suggest Avatar. James Cameron actually invented the camera and some of the technology they used. The technology frequently crashed the computers. I think this movie is a cult classic, its too wonderfully weird to get in mainstream US and Canada. Anytime a technology is new, its expensive, I don't think a cult classic will have the budget for the new technology, but hey, maybe we'll get lucky.

I feel like...if no one was interested in doing the movie then the world is a sad place. However the only trilogies based off of books I'm seeing already have huge fanbases. Eragon didn't even make it. I would like to see a movie..but not at the expense of M. Night Shayamalan being the director or something.
I wish Tim Burton.. wow. And Johnny Depp would be the John Brothers, I bet you. And all the heads would be little Johnny Depp heads. That feels like exactly what would happen if it were Tim Burton hahaha

LoL I can picture that in my mind perfectly. Who do you think Helena Bonham Carter will be then, because she is one of Tim Burton's fave actors? She plays a good crazy lady...so maybe if she can do an old woman's voice and they cgi her, Mater Motley.

There really aren't that many main female characters are there? I think she would make a hilarious Mater Motley. I agree that she would have to be evil, I can't see her as a Mespa. However, since she is comedic even while she's evil, what do you think of Helena as Laguna Munn?

March 14, 2012 interview
Revelations : "Is there anything you’d like people to know about the recent progress around Abarat movies, or are you still in lockdown on that at present?"
Clive : "Well, let me put it this way – I can’t say very much right now but the people involved are very committed to what they’re doing. We’re in active negotiations to make several Abarat movies and I think people will be delighted to hear that the people we’re talking to are people who are good at making these kinds of movies – very large scale, very expensive and very visual and, boy, Abarat is going to be, I think, a very different kind of movie: certainly one thing they have is several hundred pictures as points of reference. These people are good at making these kinds of movies - and it isn’t Disney!!"

Just saw over at Clive's twitter account that David Barron of the Potter moives is going to be a producer for the Abarat films! Clive also said that they plan to make a movie for each book!

We already knew this but:
Marc Hartkamp @marc_Hartkamp @realclivebarker Dear Clive, would the Abarat movies be completely animated or with real actors? Marc Expand Reply Retweet Favorite 23h Clive Barker @realclivebarker @marc_Hartkamp The ABARAT films will be live action but will obviously use immensely ambitious effects.

Omg omg omg omg omg *breathes* Ok...I'm ok LoL While I don't like Harry Potter itself, I think the actual way the movie was made was very well done (my husband likes it so occasionally he makes me watch it..well I sit next to him and play my DS :-) )
However, I still think much will be lost on a live action movie. I think it needs to be mostly CG or animation. I would be happy to be wrong but think of how crazy some of the people are. I don't want it to be too much circus-ey except for where the circus is! :-D
I'm just going to be positive and assume they are going to surprise the hell out of me :-) Its more fun being positive.

Give him the Wonka makeup, then add a dog cone, sew his mouth shut, trim the hair, put little strips of elastic coming out of the head, like wires, and change the outfit. Bam! Johnny=Carrion. Peter Dinklage (Tyrion from Game of Thrones) would do OK for the Johns, though personally I'd like to act as them. Helena's gotta be the Motley.

Also, just to share my two cents, made live-action with CGI! And also, Clive said this:
The movie is being adapted into one from the first and second books. I'm actually not sure if 3, 4, and 5 are going to have their own movies or be combined. I definitely think Until the End of Time has to be its own movie, but I'm not sure where Absolute Midnight and The Price of Dreams fall in.
