Unfortunately, it's more likely for the puppets to be a disaster rather than beautiful and terrifying like in Pan's Labyrinth. Unless they brought Guillermo himself to do the movie, and his crew of puppeteers and makeup artists, which would be INCREDIBLE. And Doug Jones could play all the critters. I think he'd make a lovely Malingo! Not to mention a blood-curdling Shape. By the way... I practically peed my pants when the Pale Man woke up. I feel like a Shape puppet would be done very similar.

That was really freaky. I agree; anyone else would totally butcher the movie. Well, excluding Clive Barker.

Personally, I would prefer for them to live action. But I'm so glad to see that disney won't be making it! When I first heard a movie would be made, all sorts of horrible thoughts popped into my head. Stuff like, "Oh god. I don't want to see little plastic Abarat figurines in Happy Meals. O.O" The horror! I think that if they made it live action with some animation like in the new Alice in Wonderland (I have no idea what you call it), then it would come out OK. The only thing I'm really worried about is the John brothers. When I was reading the books, my mental image of Mischief could never really fix in one place, mostly his antlers. Also, I've always thought of him with "normal" skin. i know Barker depicted him with red skin, but for some reason that idea (and with all the fan art I've seen) just doesn't seem to go with his personality for me. Makes him seem to much like he devil, or like he's really evil. Anyways, I'm really excited for the movie, just as long as they don't completely screw it up.

^I agree, live action always worked for me, animation just doesn't seem to be able to get the right kind of message to me(not saying animation is bad, just doesn't work for me in this situation). Oh my, happy meals? that would be a nightmare, next you can buy action figures and litle kids will try to flush them down the toilet becuase they never watched the movie and are complete spoiled brats with no life! And what about anti- Abaraters? those could surely develop with a bunch of bored and stupid kids getting together and burning the books! (they wouldn't be in their right minds, I mean who could hate abarat, but there always people who hate what others enjoy, just look at twilight ((even though twilight deserved it!)).

I'd like Abarat to use both real special effects and computer-generated ones. Certain characters lend themselves to makeup and costumes (Jimothi Tarrie, stitchlings) but others would be harder to do using real effects (Leeman Vol, the Johns), so a mix would be best for the characters, and I'd say the same about the environment. CG the things that can't be done a lot of the Nonce), and do the things that can be done (Inquisit could just be a model ). After that, all you need is a good script (Abarat doesn't seem like too hard a book to adapt), and worthy director (no real suggestions from me, though Terry Gilliam seems like a wonderful idea that would never conceivably happen), and we have a good Abarat movie. As for the cast, there aren't many people that spring to mind for any character (Doug Jones could be a lot of them, though), except for the obligatory Buscemi-as-Pixler, so I don't have much of an opinion on that.

Good point. A mix of the different... whatevers would work, right? As long as you do the right things the right way, I mean. Some movies are Just... done the wrong way. They're thrown together sloppily, with no regard for... something. You know. The art of it. (Sorry, that's the best my caffeine-deprived mind can come up with.) Avatar was really good. Totally a hippy movie, but still beautiful.

What if it were animated in a way that looks like Barker's art style, but similar? If it was done right that could be pretty awesome.

If it looked exactly like Barker's work then it could work. I just worry that with animation it can easily loose the mood and tone and become cheesy and disneylike. Thats my worry.

Since everyone seems to be in agreement with live action, I'm going to bring up the topic that didn't get discussed. Which scenes would the movie do without?
When I watch Harry Potter, I notice that a lot of the side characters in the books don't get much screen time. The movies mostly focus on easy to remember characters for people who haven't read the books. So i think if it were to become a movie, those side characters (like Deaux-Deaux and Tria etc) would mostly get written out. I feel like a lot of the first book wouldn't make the cut too, as terrible as that sounds. (I'm assuming here that they would meld the first two books).

Clive Barker said in an interview that he doesn't want a cartoon to be made. He wants live action with CGI along the lines of the Harry Potter or Narnia movies.

That sounds awesome ^_^. But is there really going to be just one movie, made out of all five books? It'd either be bigger beyond imagination, or the scenes would be cut down probably more than I'd like. Well, it better be worth the waiting, but I like to believe it will be.

I don't think it's ever been said that all five books will be made into one movie....Clive's comment that he wants to wait for all give to be done before a movie is made is saying that he wants the filmmakers to have the whole series to draw from so they don't mess up.
Something like this almost happened in the Harry Potter movies. When they were starting production on the fifth movie, before the seventh book came out, the filmmakers asked JK Rowling if they could cut Kreacher the house-elf from the movie. She said no, because he would be important later on. This is the type of thing Barker's probably trying to prevent.

HM. If this were the case, which minor character do you think will all of a sudden play a bigger role?

live action with CGI hands down and im glad clive is thinking that way. in any case ther is no possible way that they are going to get the same magic from the books into the movies... i think if made into a movie it has the potential to AMAZING but a lot would have to be taken out for those who didnt read the books to understand. it would be a much simpler plot taking only the most imprtant scenes i.e. from first book candy's life scenes, mischeif, and all the little stuff would be written out. either way i dont care if im 70 by the time this movie gets finished.. i will have the tickets on preorder ^__^

But, the £1,000,000 question is... Will there be a film? Because Clive took the rights back. If I remember correctly. But I really do hoPe there is a film. but, it will be nothing compared to the books.
