If they finally finished the movie (Disney Company) would you want it animated or live action? What scenes would be a must? What scenes do you think they could skip?

I think I'd actually prefer animated, especially if it meant that Barker's art could get in there. With a live action movie there'd simply be TOO much CGI stuff. It'd become Roger Rabbit-like. :-)

That could be true (roger rabbit cgi), but I think that they could pull it off being live action and animated. Kind of like Mirrormask. In fact, it would be very cool if they could get the Jim Henson Company in on it.

I hope it will be live action. CGI can be cool if done right. Or disastrous if done wrong.

I would definately want it to be with actors. They uhm did fine with Harry potter...they had an animated dragon that Kicked ASS! I mean it can be done. DOnt be such a downer guys.

Although it would be a monumental undertaking, live action would be cool. The sets would be challenging...maybe reminiscent of What Dreams May Come to be true to Clive's paintings.

Oh, live action would be a hell of a lot of trouble, to be sure. But if done right and by the right people, the end result would be fantastic. All those sets to design, costumes, and CGI where costumes won't cut it. But lord if it wouldn't be magnificent.
I'm personally dead set against animation and complete CGI. I'd really like to see some real actors in there. However they did it would trash my mental images of the characters, so might as well go all the way. ^-^

What I hate about Abarat being turned into a movie is that there will be fans of the movie who have never read the books... the thought of anyone trying to talk to me about Abarat without having even read the books makes me sick.
I do hope it's live action, but I'm really afraid that casting will be horrible. One thing that's reassuring about Disney is that they have the money and resources for INCREDIBLE animation and CGI. I just hope it turns out like Pirates of the Caribbean, where Disney has the rights, but has almost nothing to do with the making of the movie.

*lets out a shout of joy* It's official! Disney is no longer doing the movie! And Clive wants to wait until he's done with the series so that the girl playing Candy doesn't get too old over the short amount of time taking place in the series.
Anyway, I agree with the above statement. I mean, when a movie is made, you all know it's gonna be such a huge thing. Abarat is at least twice as good as Harry Potter, in complexity of both the world and the characters. The fandom will become enormous, but not a single one will bother with the books. And that will absolutely kill me. Trying to discuss things with "fans" who don't even know the intricacies of the series because they've only seen the movie... And of course, being cut down to movie-length will mean a lot gets left out. Some of the morbidities and bitty details and sequences we all find so endearing will be lost.
As for casting, I heard someone say they wanted whatsisface, guy who played Voldemort, cast as Carrion. The thought made me want to cry.

Where did you find that? I think that's one of the best things I've heard in my entire life. Too good to be true, in fact. I need proof!

I forget if I've heard this or not. Thank goodness Disney let it go. I was very distressed upon discovering they had rights to the movie... I have no faith in Disney anymore.
Voldemort as Carrion... No Thank You! The problem with casting actors who have already played a villain is that you see them as their previous role, and of course that ruins the current one. I believe they need to find an all new cast for Abarat, because if I recognize any of the actors, I believe it would ruin the characters for me.

I could see live action/CGI. Using the movies MirrorMask and Hellboy as examples.

've read about it too! It was an interview with Clive Barker. Maybe on his official page? I can't remember.

The movie should def be live action, since everyone is displaying pretty complex emotions in the book, which CGI characters just can't manage. Especially Carrion, if his face doesnt show his emotions, he could end up as just plain evil....or annoying. Fingers crossed that whatever they do, it'll be another cinema exerience that leaves me asking, did someone spike my drink??

I think the movie would do best as a live action. They could of course CGI some things like the backgrounds, Mischief's many heads, Mendelson Shape tallness, the nightmare's in Carrion's fishbowl (lol), etc. But I think what they need to do, to really keep the original paintings is color them like they as they are in the books. Almost give them a colorful gasoline effect. Then again I might just be crazy, but I think that would be interesting.

Then again I might just be crazy, but I think that would be interesting. That would be strange, but cool! If the CGI was done right, it would rock. But it could also be overdone and leave you feeling like it lost the "alternate reality" feel that it could be connected to our world. Get what I am saying? I agree with the live action...the only thing I would hate was if they hired really bad actors. The characters are so complex, and you'd really have to grasp that to allow the audience to get that too. Ugh, "fans" would kill me. But sadly, that is what seems to happen to most books that get turned into movies. Hmmm...we could be all old and wrinkly by the time the final book gets released and they finally get around to a movie!! =D

I think live action is definitely the way to go. People have been saying they're wary of overusing CGI, but that's not the only option. Take Guillermo del Toro's movies for instance. A good deal of the special effects are all in the costumes and makeup. In Pan's Labyrinth, the Pale Man to me was horrifying because of how realistic he looked, and how completely real his movements were. I believe the only real CGI they used for him was when he held up his hands with the eyes, and a green screen for his legs. Other than that, it was a full suit and makeup.
Even puppets are an alternative for some of the creatures. The Dark Crystal and even Labyrinth had a stunning amount of detail in their puppet characters, more than they would have if they were CGI creations, especially in the darker characters. They just had so much expression.
Imagine characters such as Carrion, Malingo and Shape, all brought to life with detailed, good old-fashioned makeup. With the attention it deserves, the results would be astounding.
