According to my iPhone, Abarat 3 is will be released in 111 days. Not sure exactly how accurate that is, but probably pretty close.
How does that make you feel?
I remember my dad buying the book for me when I was 10 or so. I looked at the cover and thought it looked completely ridiculous. I refused to read it for a month or so, but when I finally did I loved it. I still have that original hardcover, though the binding is getting messed up, the corners are squished, there are stains, scratches, and the dust cover has long been destroyed.
When I was in 5th grade I weaseled my teacher into reading the whole book out loud to us over a period of a few months, and for years my copy of the first book still had all her little post-it notes predicting the plot and commenting on the story, but I've since taken them out.
When the second book was released, one of my friends received the book for her birthday and let me read it immediately. I still love her for this. I was still only 12 or 13, and I remember that when it was revealed that Boa shared Candy's body I was extremely surprised.
As some of you know, I started a fanfiction for Abarat more than a year ago. At first I really thought I'd be able to finish it; I really thought I wasn't going to end up like other writers who just stop updating one day. However, this pretty much happened to me. I didn't run out of ideas (not nearly) and I didn't get tired of the fic; I just hate my own writing, which, as you can imagine, makes it extremely difficult to write. Lately I can't bear to publish anything I write, and it's really what stopped me from writing more of my fic. Still, it was fun while it lasted, and I'm extremely grateful to everyone who read it, reviewed, encouraged, and helped.
Today, I had to do a presentation about my favorite book, song, and movie in English. I chose Abarat and talked for a minute or two about why the books are important to me and why I liked them. Later a girl came up to me and said that she'd read one of them around 6th grade and always thought that the title's ability to be read upside-down or right side up was extremely entertaining.
I also got my yearbook for senior year today. I used a Clive Barker quote ("We burn so hard, but we shed so little light; it makes us crazy and sad.") from his novel Galilee for my senior quote.
Needless to say, I can't wait for the next book. It's been a long wait, but I've had some fun along the way.
What are your Abarat memories? :3
