I don't consider myself a shipper, by and large. If there is a relationship that I feel is prevalent in a give work, I will support it. Candy and Malingo, while not set in stone, is something I feel is probably happening, so I'll put him down, not only because I think he'll end up with her, but because he's a cool dude. I guess you can call me a shipper if you like on this, but I have a feeling we may see substantial evidence for this "pairing" in book three.
It's worth saying that I think Candy may one day have to leave the Abarat forever, along with anyone she cares about in it, including whoever she starts a relationship with.

...He's a geshrat. Is that weird for anyone else? Or am I just racist against geshrats?

Yeah I think it would be weird if she was with a creature that isn't humanoid... but maybe thats just me too... haha

It is a bit weird, yeah. But I think Malingo's humanoid enough. If he were some type of furry (like two-toed Tom) it would be different.

I don't think Malingo is too strange a creature, fins can be cute right? Plus, he dedicates a lot of his emotions to her, I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up 'liking' her as well. I voted for Letheo because I'm pretty sure he likes her at least a little. And as for Carrion, well he loves Boa, so that's a possibility as well. As for Candy however--I don't think she plans to be romantically involved with anyone. She's more of a free spirit. Since it is slightly a children's book, it's likely CB will leave romance out altogether. But that's just me trying to be realistic.

Well, in a few ways Barker has already included romance in the books. We have the story of Boa, Carrion and Finnegan in the past, the story of Numa Child and Elathuria, and Two-Toed Tom's whole thing. With all that I wouldn't be surprised if we got some romance between main characters, but I also recall Barker hinting at romantic involvement later in the series....I believe it was in the same comment where he said the age Candy would be at the end of the series.

I'm pretty sure he made a comment about Candy's sexual progression, as well.

Honestly... I think the only good pairing for Candy is Malingo. He's the only one who could probably woo her, and he's a great. I'm a total shipper
Blegh... I </3 Typos....

I love Malingo & Candy & their friendship together... but I don't want to ship them. I guess in general I don't like different species falling in love. Maybe if the creatures are both humanoid or something similar. Malingo could be humanoid... but the drawings of him don't verify it enough for me. It seems most of the fan art portrays him more humanoid than Clive did. I don't know, we'll have to see what happens.
- Japanesecarp: I love your avatar btw. Did you draw that yourself? Thanks for joining the forum.

Thanks for joining the forum. I do all my artwork Myself. Sorry I'm still learning to use the forum. Idk, Clive draws Differently as it is. I honestly Ship Candy and Malingo Because they make sense to me. I'm Really against Pairing a Villain with a Hero unless there is evidence that they could work together. There just isn't enough of that for me to believe that Carrion and Candy could work, and I've read the books like... 6 times. Also, Finnegan is like... Boa's Lover, it'd be WAY to cliche and Clive isn't known for being Cliche, If Candy and Finnegan were together. Plus he's not really that great a person anymore from what I can Gather. Thus, Leaves Malingo and John Mischief. Malingo sticks by Candy no matter what even though she can be a huge Headache. He fights for her, when In all Honesty he really doesn't have to. Mischief, I think he does Care for Candy, But how Awkward would it be to be Going out with one man and All seven of his brothers are ALWAYS with you? Anyways That's just my Opinion and what I've Deduced from The series so far, But there are still two more books after Absolute Midnight, So it could go anywhere.

Candy is just the type to look past his appearance and into his heart. Plus, it would probably annoy Boa greatly wouldn't it? >:]

I would like to see in the end Carrion and Candy... but it's not reasonable.
Malingo and Candy is wrong. Not because of species, but because there bond of friendship would demean them both. Their love as friends is what makes them a good for the books.
Finnegen... no. Don't like him. Also for other reasons as of book 3.
Letheo is my personal favourite. Though I think it should be down the road.
In the books. No one. Candy is suppose to be a strong character and I think while we all like the idea of romantic relationships. I think any romantic relationship so early would just demean her strength.

I used to be that way about Carrion and Candy. I sorta considered how he's older, how he's done all these awful things, how she swore to dislike him forever because of his grotesquerie and so on. At that point I thought Candy and Malingo would work but I wasn't terribly enthusiastic (the bit in the boat in book 3 was adorable though...) But then I essentially said "eff it" and now I shamelessly ship the two, I swear I'm a teratophile at this stage. xD;;

...He's a geshrat. Is that weird for anyone else? Or am I just racist against geshrats? I mean, I don't see it being weird if they really end up caring for each other strongly in that romantic sense. Can't love be transcending in these types of cases, where 2 beings are of different forms? The story of Numa Child and Elathuria is a pretty good example of this, I think. I think Malingo is humanoid enough. Honestly, Candy/Carrion seems pretty weird to me, if not more. There's a few instances where she's just plain freaked out by him and feels sullied in a way, lol. I just don't think it'd be the best if they ended up together like that. I think the best resolution for them is that they stay as friends, somehow. Also, the relationship between Carrion, Boa & Finnegan has complications and I don't think Candy should immerse herself between them too much. I would like to see in the end Carrion and Candy... but it's not reasonable. Malingo and Candy is wrong. Not because of species, but because there bond of friendship would demean them both. I think any romantic relationship so early would just demean her strength. I don't understand what you mean by Malingo & Candy's friendship being demeaned if they become romantic..? I don't think it would really lessen them as characters. And right now I consider them almost like best friends, and I think what makes relationships special is that your special someone (lol) is your best friend as well as your partner. So I think it has the potential to strengthen their particular relationship in a way. Also, do you mean that her being in a relationship would make her more vulnerable because that person she'd be with would be her weak point, with her being the heroine and everything? If so, I guess that makes sense. Overall it'd be nice to see her end up together with someone, but she doesn't need to. My best guess is Malingo, as of now. They've traveled so much together and experienced a ton of things, have stayed by each other's side. And that boat scene in Book 3 was really nice and sweet. Also, I just really like Malingo x-D I think he's a pretty cool and likeable...geshrat-dude. As for Gazza, I have some suspicions to where that will go but I dunno. Letheo...I'm not even sure, haha. Anyway, I'm excited to just find out how everything further progresses! I can't wait for Book 4 >o<

Personally the very first person from Abarat she met was John Mischief, and he charmed her enough to get her to risk her life for him. She could've just followed him to Abarat and not have done anything to save him from Shape. So personally, I think their love would work. Personally, I feel like the brothers are something to laugh at lol. It would be a cute feature. I want to see Mischief's wife becoming evil for Carrion and dying in the end at the hands of Boa or maybe Candy. I also feel so bad for Melissa Quackenbush. Anyone else feel bad for Candy's mom?

4 years after the last post, I came to add my opinion... since the third book is out and we are still waiting for the fourth. Ever since I got the first book I thought that Candy is dating Malingo. I think they can be together. It won't affect them much, cuz I believe they already love each other in their own ways. I felt sorry for Malingo when the whole thing with Gazza happened. I personnaly don't like this guy just because we don't know anything about him. And it makes him less important character for me. Mischief and his brothers are cute tho, but I don't think it would really worked, since there's 8 different personalities. Parts with Carrion were sad and I actually felt sorry for him and wished him love he deserves, but not Candy. She's trying to be kind but can't forgive him all those brutalities he did. I really think that she should have ended up with Malingo
