Excuse me if this theory has been posted before, as it doesn't seem like the hardest theory to think of.
So, the creatures of the Abarat are pretty weird, huh? But, by far, one of the weirdest is John Mischief. He has seven brothers who exist as tiny heads sprouting from the horns on the top of his head, and as small as their heads are they seem to be as smart as regular people. And they all have the same name.
Now this is all strange enough. But, in interviews concerning Abarat 3, Clive has mentioned that we'll meet a female version of the Johns, who are like the male version in nearly every way except gender. Clive hadn't decided on their name when he first mentioned them, but I'll call them the Janes.
So, there are two creatures of nearly the same constitution in the Abarat. We never see anyone else that looks like these creatures, or has any of the attributes of these creatures. Doesn't that seem sort of strange to you, that as far as we know, only two of these creatures were ever born...Or, perhaps, made?
If the thread's title didn't tip you off to where I'm going with this, you should know by now. I think that the Johns and the Janes were made, and brought to life with the Conjuration. Given John's theify nature, I'd say he ran away from his home and that Janes have been sent to find him and bring him back. That's a bit more speculate-y than the rest of it, though.
