I'm finally writing some Abarat fanfiction after years of wanting to. I always thought I would develop bad habits if I started writing fanfiction, and I berated myself for not being able to come up with an original idea of my own. Now I've resigned to my fate and have resolved to have fun with my writing.
I'd love to hear what you guys think of it, and I deeply regret leaving the forum for such a long time. Not sure if anyone remembers me or not... <3
Title: Moon or No Moon
Summary: Ignorant of the consequences, Candy makes a decision that seems insignificant, but it will change her journey completely. Story starts in the Dead Man's House. Canon until pg. 342 of Book 2. CandyxCarrion.
I've posted it on fanfiction.net, and my profile can be found here: www.fanfiction.net/u/1924178/Epiphanott
The fic can be found here: www.fanfiction.net/s/5920967/1/Moon_or_No_Moon
Chapter One: She Endures[/u][/i]
Note: Everything written in bold is quoted directly from pg. 341 and 342 of Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War. These are not my words, they are Clive Barker's. I will probably not do this much after the prologue. All characters belong to Clive Barker as well, except any I make up. Rating may change later, as I'm not sure how graphic it will get.
The story begins when Carrion is talking to Candy on the steps of the Dead Man's House in Efreet. Enjoy.
"You look perplexed," Carrion said.
"Yes…well, I guess I am," Candy admitted. "I just don't know what it is your grandmother—or you, come to that—see in me. But whatever it is I'm supposed to be…I'm not."
"No?" he said, very softly.
He smiled and reached up to take hold of her hand. No doubt it was a perfectly innocent gesture, but there was something about the way that smile made his face look—like a death's head, grinning in its rot—that made Candy want to pull her hand away. In fact, she almost did. She felt her arm twitch, almost as if it had recently decided to become independent of her.
Then, she remembered how pitiful he'd sounded only moments before, and felt a dull ache spreading in her chest. She'd known enough of rejection during her short life in Chickentown to know that she couldn't hurt this creature now. And besides: she could still be in danger. It wasn't worth the risk of putting him in a volatile mood.
Still, she felt uncomfortable in her own skin at the thought of his touch.
All of this went through her head in less than a second. Her heart began to pound as she watched his hand move closer to her own. By the time he reached her, she felt as if a full minute had gone by, but knew it couldn't have been that long.
The visions began the moment his flesh met hers.
