I came up with a Vocaloids fanfiction, but there's a very complicated backstory. So, my question is: should I leave it as a fanfiction, or write it as an original fic with OCs rather than the Vocaloids?
For anyone who doesn't know, Vocaloids are artificial voice software. Most of them are Japanese. There are a few English ones, but they all suck. I'm only using the Japanese for this fanfiction, and probably the fanmades at some point.
So, here's the backstory, over-dramatic synopsis style:
Decades into the future, genetic engineering and technology both have been taken to extremely high levels, for militant and civilian purposes. In that way, the world has almost regressed into a steam-era society; it's not uncommon to see a massive cartload of bricks or similar substance being pulled by an ant/horse hybrid, or a whole crowd of humans riding on an elephant-bus. Also fairly, though they're almost always for military use, are "walkers", war-machines mostly designed after insects. They range from small, one-man two-leggers to walking cities with ten legs or more. Some fanatic groups are violently against the hybrids and/or walkers, but it has remained relatively peaceful.
Relatively.
When a group of terrorists hijack a large walker and drive it haphazardly across Europe and Asia, firing indiscriminately at any and all human habitations in their way, the situation goes from volatile to an all-out explosion. The terrorists are killed, many by suicide once they realize that capture is inevitable. Only one survives, and after heavy interrogation, reveals that they are from a small radical sect of anti-hybrids based in England. The English military denies any knowledge of them, backed by Germany, France, and other coastal European countries. Most of Asia is against them, though whether all the Asian countries are on the same side is another question entirely. More and more terrorist groups, spurred to action by the first, emerge, slaughtering innocents and destroying habitations and machinery. Countries begin to take sides, and it looks increasingly like World War III is on the way.
A pivotal point in this chaos is the German scientist Bernard Althaus. He has successfully synthesized a human, something no other scientist has been able to do. His 'made' humans are stronger, faster, smarter than normal humans; their only limitations are their programming. No one is quite sure what their full abilities are, not even Althaus himself. These new humans--Vocaloids--become a rallying point for the world's forces. Extremely powerful, worth several hundred soldiers and a few walkers as well on their own, they are either rejected as abominations or valued as weapons. They are computers in human form, the ultimate artificial intelligences. Whatever their programmers desire them to be, they are.
No one expected them to develop personalities.
These synthetic humans would be the Vocaloids/OCs. I don't know if I can start off involving them, since they wouldn't be used until actual fighting broke out, and by then it'll take too long to explain the events leading up to it.
What say you?
