The title is pretty explanatory. But what I mean is:
Most of us don't like Boa, for reasons we've already gone over. All of us like Carrion, for obvious reasons. So, why do we all dislike Finnegan so much?

I personally don't hate Finnegan, I just find him a little bland. He seemed a little too much like Boa; everyone says that as soon as you meet them, you fall under their charm and realize they're such good people, but there hasn't been much evidence so far. As a reader, I don't enjoy just being told how to view a character. I like to be able to see and experience what makes them who they are, and I just haven't gotten much of that with Finnegan.

What I don't like is his stupid mass culling of all the dragons. Ok so one ate his bride, but come on, the whole of the Abarat believes the dragon was sent by Carrion. It just seems to me that he's going after the easy target, rather than squaring up to Carrion. I mean, you don't see the families of people killed by sharks heading off to sea with a harthingy, taking out all the sharks for revenge. I think he's got a screw loose.
Finnegan = dragon murderer. He even wanted to kill that little baby dragon, leave it alone you freak!! ... that's why I don't like him. Good question though!!

I know! It's too random. I don't like it. I have no interest in his character, like, at all.
And...I know I'm supposed to use the spoiler banner...but I don't feel like finding the link.
And I like your profile picture! It's cute XP

I always hated Finnegan because he was just too perfect. "The perfect prince" I believe Carrion called him. I just usually hate the hero archetypal characters. **SPOILER ALERT** Ahahaha but yeah my hatred for Finnegan is nothing compared to the way I feel for our new pal Gazza... Pretty sure this sums it all up 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lw6devIxVh1ql7g6wo1_250.gif

Hey. I'm not a year+ late on this thread I'm so glad i'm not the only one who dislikes Hob, Boa and tends to like Carrion. I can't read all the comments as there are spoilers... but yay. I had thought that Abarat being for Young Readers(and found in the teen section) would lead to a more straight forward liking of the hero's. It's nice to see that this isn't the case and I don't feel like a villain after having posted in book 2 about Hob and Boa. Though my eyes have already seen the name Gaaza and the gif and am.... not happy to see the indications. Personally I was thinking more Candy + Letheo after a few years of friendship. I agree with the other sentiments. He's a murder. We are told to like him He is written as to be "perfect" by having said so Carrion disliked him. This is a plus in my book let alone.. I just don't like him. I wonder if CB intended for us not too like him.

Gazza... bad character. BAD. Really. Such a demeaning character. No prior reference. No personality. Yet oooh such true love. Love of love.. love love love. Candy has been demeaned and lessoned due to this character. She is suppose to be strong. At least introduce a few chapters to let us know this character. I hope it's some one in disguise. uggg.
it's just wrong.

I hoped it would be Christopher in disguise but noooope. :S Clive did say that we should trust him because it will make sense in time, so I have stopped being angry. I figure that the main problem with Gazza is that Clive miscarried it by bringing this new element in too fast and too late into the plot. If he'd developed it slower and made it clear where he's going with it before the book ended (because honestly I don't know) then it would have been alright. Maybe even good. I just feel like he tried to cram it into a book with a lot going on already. But there was someone somewhere who had a theory that this whole thing is related to how Carrion told Candy to come back and tell him when she'd loved and lost...I think that's what's going to happen.

Yes to the whole 'love lost' thing. I also think the problem was also the huge time gap in between the books. Personally, I got used to and fell in love with all the old characters, so it was very hard to accept a new one in and expected to befriend him with such an intensity so quickly. But he did have that interview at one point where Phil and Sarah and CB basically said those of us who didn't approve of the love at first sight were not fully understanding Candy's connection to the Abarat. Or, at least, that was the impression I gained. I don't like this argument, because most of us are good fans, and I haven't seen one person who had no qualms with Gazza. So hmph. I'll be childish about it for now I guess. I'm glad to see someone else who supported Letheo I feel like less of a freak to hear you say that. This thread might be morphing into 'Why do we all hate Gazza?' AND I LOVE THAT ICON. There are some hilarious names on it. A MANTIZAC!!!!

Gazza... everything seemed a little off to me in the book. Meh. Then again, looking back. Candy has always had a sort of childish way of flooking at everything (fair enough, she's still rather young) and is ready to trust everyone. I dont believe Gazza is the one true love of Candy's life, the sudden 'I love you' strikes me of playground dating and kids stuff. He seems like the kind of guy you love when you are young, because he's good looking and brave and stuff... Later on you realise, nice try mate with the smooth talking... But I'm not falling for that!
Seems to me Gazza only 'loved' her once he knew who she was. I think Candy is going to get her heart broken. .... I just want Gazza to be bad!!! If he isnt, CB is gonna have to pull something really shocking out of the bag, because really...
I understand Candy's motives... but that doesnt have to mean I like Gazza!
