This thread isn't just for me, that'd be rude, so everyone can post and ask questions. Everyone here has got one thing in common, (if nothing else) which is a love of reading. Together we must have read a library. Anyway, I’m fed up of picking up books, getting halfway and realising I can’t stand the characters and the plot is terrible. But every now and then you find a gem! ;D So, I am always on a quest to find books, mainly adventure ones or horror, where the main character is female. Not that I don’t like books about boys, but since I’m a girl I prefer kick ass girl leads. Does anyone have anything they can recommend me?

If you're into fantasy at all I'd recommend The Artefacts of Power-series by Maggie Furey, the main character is a kick ass-female. As for horror... hm, I can't think of any good horror with strong female character rigth now, but I'll get back to you.

Hmm... adventure books where the main character is a kick-ass female... I know a couple!
basically ANYTHING by Tamora Pierce falls under this category - I love her books about Alanna the female knight. I remember reading it when I was going through puberty, and at one point in the first book (?) she got her period and I was SO excited. It's the only book I've read so far that addresses this without being ABOUT this, you know what I mean?
I love Howl's Moving Castle... but the female lead is awesome in a totally different way. The main character, a young, average looking girl, is transformed into an old woman by an evil witch. It's an excellent book. And I recently saw the Hayao Miyazaki film based on this... it was REALLY different, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
There's The Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Anne Pierce (I hope I spelled this right). I haven't read it in a long time, but I remember everything that happens in the book happens because the main character, a female, is brave and selfless.
Oh gosh... there's probably soooo more, but I can't think of any. Are you looking for other types of books aside from those similar to Abarat? Because I can think of plenty of books with strong female leads that aren't necessarily fantasy.

I agree, definitely check out Howl's Movie Castle if you get a chance, along with the film. Hmm...it's been a while since I have read any books with good strong females characters, what's up with that?!?

Well, I think fantasy is generally with male lead characters, for some reason. But there are plenty of great books outside of the genre with really dynamic female leads. For example... The Secret Life of Bees, Where the Heart Is, The Scarlet Letter, or Gone With the Wind, just to name a few. A lot of books based on fairy tales have really great female leads, too.

Sure! I am looking for really good fantasy books the DO NOT have to deal with vampires or werewolves (haha). Right now I am reading the first Dragonriders of Pern series, and I like it. Any thoughts?

Two that I dug up from memory are A Wizard of Earthsea, and Keturah and Lord Death. You've probably read or at least heard of Earthsea. It's so poetic, and atmospheric, and magical, and - *spazzes*. It's also a traditional fantasy, and slow at times. Keturah is very original- however it was uneventful in the middle. Only the fascinating premise was enough to keep my interest- and I'm glad I did. Plus... the end is one half fulfilling and one half unexpected. Also, if you don't mind science-y magic and science in your fantasy, definitely read the Young Wizards Series by Diane Duane (there are 8 of them so far >_>). They can be juvenile at times (written for young adults), but the characters grow up. The lead is a girl, and her best friend and partner is a boy, and they are both bookworms =3

There's a good mythical book that doesn't get much of a spotlight. It's called "Hollow Kingdom" by Clare B. Dunkle. It's about a girl named Kate who fights the "evil" Goblin King from taking her as his bride. Lots of twists and turns. It's a trilogy (but I believe the first book is the best) Enjoy!!!

Farenheit451 had a girl in it that inpired me so much that I wanted to be exactly like her. Both her and Anne Frank (if you haven't read her diary yet) have inspired me as women.

Still to read are Books of Blood, the Great and Secret Show, and Weaveworld. Those are the ones I have. Also, hopefully Imajica if I can find it somewhere. I've read Mister B. Gone and Thief of Always. I still prefer the Abarat books though
