Begins: April 22nd (technically the 23rd) Chapter 12 - "A Talk on the Tide"
I'm sorry guys! I'm such an idiot! All day I've been thinking it was the 22nd - I was writing it down that way all over the place - and I realized that today was, in fact, the 23rd and that I had missed posting up Chapter 12! D:
Anyways, now you can all discuss chapter 12 of the first Abarat book. Next Wednesday, the 29th, we will discuss Chapter 13 - "In The Great Head"

There is plenty of things to discuss in this chapter, first being the discovery that there are different stars over the Abarat. Candy is "distressed" by this, and is "a little afraid of what lay ahead."
We get a small taste of Abaratian politics also in this chapter, when the Johns explain that they are "moving through the Ring of Darkness." We learn that Efreet is one of the "Unfettered" islands, governing themselves, not paying any taxes to the Abaratian government, or the Commexo Company.
Personally I find this very interesting, and would like to know more about the Abarat goverment and the unfettered islands. It all sounds very complex, and no longer just the Night VS the Day.
Question: Who is Inflixia Grueskin? She sounds pretty nasty.
There are some fantastic lyrics the sea-skippers have for O Christmas Tree, featured in this chapter. I assume everyone has had a go at singing this?
This chapter really does end with a sense of, What will happen next? Since Candy is left totally alone, and the dissapearance of the John brothers so soon is not something, as a reader I was prepared for!

I spent so much time singing the Sea-Skippers' song that my sister, who has never even opened one of the Abarat books, has memorized the lyrics.
I feel like it was a bit irresponsible for the Johns to abandon Candy like that. Sure, they were in trouble at the moment, but they were leaving this Hereafter girl in the middle of one of the most populous islands of the Abarat with no where to go, nothing to do, and no one to seek help from. Plus she has no Abaratian money, she's wearing strange clothes, and she's soaked to the bone.
I don't know about Inflixia Grueskin - part of me believes that she's just a character mentioned in passing like a lot of Abaratians, but another part of me believes that she seems like just the character Clive would want to use again.
