Who here is a big fan of The Lord of Midnight? Do you think he makes for an excellent villain? What are your thoughts about him?

I'm not his fan... But I do have some sympathy for him. I hope he isn't really dead. Because I think Mother Mothley will give everybody even a harder time than he did. At leasthe had a heart, she doesn't.

He just needs some love and sympathy, possibly also someone who'll just give him a look when he starts acting a little too princely. Then he'll be a little more tolerable! >.>; No, I don't want him to stop being evil, it's so endearing that he can be totally evil and monstrous and still have a heart to love the beautiful things...
Stop giving me those looks, I'm not crazy!

I think Christopher Carrion is a brilliant character. He is so deep and emotional, something completely amazing in fantasy, where the villains are almost always shallow characters that don't have any detail or qualities that make them interesting. I mean, sure, he's the antagonist, but at the same time readers feel his pain and sympathize with him. He's doing evil deeds, but we know his motivation and how he feels about it all. There's something really beautiful about Christopher Carrion as a character. I love him, but I think that even readers who don't love Carrion understand what I mean.

I love Carrion. He is the greatest villian i've seen. He is so evil... yet he has human emotions which we are aware of.... its just interesting to read about him.

You keep saying what I'm thinking! >< ^-^ I couldn't agree more. Carrion is a beautiful character. Barker has a real talent for wonderful, deep characters that catch your interest and don't let go. Typical villains annoy me because they're usually so cliched, as well as shallow. Carrion's so original, and anything but shallow.

That's really what makes Clive Barker so amazing. I mean, even his art is so abstract, but we can feel all of the emotions very strongly, even though we might have never seen anything like it before. It's like he holds this extreme understanding of human emotion in his hand and he pins little pieces of it to his art and writing. He knows what the readers want to see and what we're sick of and what we're longing for. His characters are able to fit all of our standards.

Is he god? x.x
I'd love to have that much knowledge of human emotions.

Aww how can you not love the guy. I mean yeah he wants to basically destroy/take over Abarat, but you know that could all be cured with some hugs. Sometimes I don't know who to cheer for; him or Candy. Thats what i think makes him such a magnificent character.
abaratianxslasher pretty much has it all summed up nicely.

"With a few hugs" I think it might take a bit more than that... How about years of therapy and his past memories being erased? ^-^
Complex characters make my world go round.

*gigglesnort* It's talk like that what makes online life worth it. Therapy... XD
*huggles Carrion* If you just hug him enough times, I'm sure it'll make a difference. Just make sure you have enough power to make yourself invulnerable. Say nice things to him, feed him properly, and maybe get some sort of lotion for his face... And hug him! Eventually, he'll get so loved out he'll just give up. ^-^
On second thought, he wouldn't be near as shiny anymore if he just submits... 0.0

LMAO...omg u kill me. Yeah i'm a big fan of prince carrion. he's a deeply conflicted character. that makes him even more interesting. :-). Complicated characters grab the readers interest more than an undeveloped one. This is why classical literature endures...the characters have many levels...just like christopher carrion. I hope he hasnt died. i'd be sad because he was so interesting to read about.

I love bad guys. And he's genius compared to all that I have encountered. I would marry that guy. I have flipped to that page where he changes from Masper to himself so many times that there is a crease in it.

Christopher Carrion is by far one of the most interesting chars because he shows his flaws and very few characters do that really in the book. You don't see much flaws from the Day people and because of these flaws he becomes very very recognisable. Because he follows his emotions a bit stronger than we can do...apart from being intellectual and slightly doubting which way to follow himself. He is like Candy searching and he'd better not find out about this site or else his ego might get a huge boost.

I'm not sure I ever really viewed Carrion as a real villain. Guess that's cuz I'm so sympathetic. Always find myself wondering that if certain things had been a little bit different that what could have happened?
This guy is great cuz he's just such a complex character. There's a lot about him we know but there could be so much more we don't know at the same time.

I don't think Carrion's really the bad guy, exactly. Mater Motley is. I'd say he's kind of like a puppet, but that makes him seem weak and shallow, which he definitely isn't. He's just hurt and lost. Lol, maybe hugs would help. Lots and lots of them. He is my favorite character, no competition. I really hope he's not dead. That would just totally screw up the story.

I think Clive said somewhere that he hasn't yet revealed the real bad guy. I don't think Carrion is the 'real' bad guy here; in my more fantasical wishful thinking, he ends up on the 'good guy' side. They're talking about it being a war between dark and light, but really, it seems like the 'real' bad guys are just going to want to cause pain and aren't going to care about what side you're on (Like the Requiax, or the Sacbrood). It seems like it's not just dark/light, but evil/good, since, like Jimothi said, dark can be as honorable as light.

I think the dynamic Clive Barker puts in all the villains in this series is remarkable. If Carrion were the only villain in the story, that would definitely suffice; he's cruel, he's inventive and intelligent, and he's a match for everyone. But the fact that there are other antagonists in the story, such as Mater Motley (whose cruelty surpasses even Carrion's), gives Carrion whole new dimensions. He's not just the power-hungry tyrant, he has layers of emotions and all kinds of complexities to his character. Honesty, he's what makes the series worth reading for me. If he doesn't make an appearance in the next book, I'm not reading it, and I probably won't continue the series until he returns.
