Begins: April 8th Chapter 10 - "The Waters" + short untitled poem
As of today, Wednesday, April 8th, the discussion of Chapter 10 of the first Abarat book starts!
I feel like the further we get into Abarat, the better our discussions will get. I hope you guys prove me right!
Next Wednesday, April 15th, the eleventh chapter, "The Card Players", will be opened for discussion.

For me, there wasn't a whole lot in this chapter for discussion purposes, but there were a couple of oddities I wanted to bring up -
First of all, the John's family. Mischief has all of his brothers on his head. I'm sure we'll never have an explanation why. But in this chapter he reveals he had a sister, who obviously wasn't on his head. Do you imagine she had sisters on her horns as well. I'm tempted to think it's an Abaratian race, but then I'm left wondering if they were ever to have families with a more normal race, what would happen? Lots of siamese twins? I don't know. I shouldn't try making sense of pure fantasy. I guess it's just the analytical part of me rearing its ugly head.
Also, to me, it almost seems as though the Johns have been to Hereafter before. In Abarat, it's obvious many people don't believe it exists. Not only do the brothers know enough about it to compare it to Abarat, but they knew how to get there, about the harbor, and about the ball and cup. I think that's probably another thing we won't ever really know (although the writer in my brain is coming up with a hundred situations to explain this).

When re-reading this chapter, I noticed there wasn't really any explanation to how Mischief got to the Hereafter in the first place. And more importantly, why has he gone there at all, when the task he gives Candy is calling the Sea to take him home again? All I can suppose is that he arrives there by accident. Just as Candy is meant to be there at that particular moment, it must be the same logic for the John Brothers.
If the rumors are to be believed that Mischief does have a wife in the next book, and she has a similar arrangement of sisters on her head, then they must be some sort of race. Or one heck of a coincidence!

I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the next chapter discussion, but I decided to post it here because we started talking about it. Anyways...
In the next chapter, the Sea-skippers immediately know Candy's talking about John Mischief just from her description of him. Which means if there are more people like him, they must be very, very rare.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that... Hmm, oh well I'm sure we'll find out more with the next books.
