How do you guys feel with Candy bein the heroine? Do you think she has what it takes to be a true heroine? Do you think she makes an usual heroine or is she too typical?

I'm really critical about female characters. There seems to be three types, and seriously three, because almost every female character can be sorted into one or the other. There are the types of female characters that are strong... TOO strong. The epitome and extreme of this case is like Holly Short from Artemis Fowl. She's a good character, but she's way too much of an independent female cliche and it can get really frustrating to read about her. On the other hand, there are the damsel in distress characters. Usually, these female characters are in more realistic books than fantasy, but they're the love interest, the battered wife/daughter or the girl who has been ruined by society or her family. And there's a smaller sub-group of female characters who embody a certain cliche or personality trait. Think Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, and how she is the typical female book worm, smarty pants character.
I actually LOVE Candy. She's the best female protagonist I could have asked for. She doesn't fit into any of these categories, because at times she is one and at times she is the other. She's realistic, her personality and her role have ups and downs, and she acts like a real teenager!

Wow you put a lot of thought into that. I totally agree though. I hate damsel in distress characters. I love really independent female roles though.. but as you say it can get old now and then lol...especially if they are too perfect.

Yeah, originally I loved independent female characters, but now there are too many of them and they're getting too cliched.

if candy was usual would we still read abarat? probably not. She was stuck in the usual when she lived in chickentown and she didnt fit in. so that right there should point out that she isnt the typical character.

In the earlier stages of the books, Candy seemed to be "Like all girls, something and nothing," as Wolfswinkel said to Houlihan when they were on the phone. (Have I read the books too many times, or what?) But then, isn't everyone? One thing I really, really love about both Candy and the series is that they do not spend time dwelling on how different the Abarat is. If I was an author of a work of such imagination, I would not want to spend time labouring over how the new land was soo different from ours. You can't pigeonhole our heroine- which is another reason to like her :3
