Do you notice the different characters growing and evolving? Which ones are more obvious and which are more subtle? Are there any characters in the Abarat series you think have no character growth at all? What events or situations trigger these growths you think? Do you do you think they changed for better or worse?

candy has definately grown (thats a no brainer). She went from being this bored kid in class to being someone capable of escaping the forces of evil and managing to be able to take in the magic of abarat.

I think that the biggest changes will come during, or after the long Night in Absolute Midnight. I think that in the shelter of the dark, true colours will come through, or a few very important people will reveal their true purposes of thoughts. To join the Captain Obvious crew, Malingo changed as well. Instead of being fearful, he has overcome his fear and learned courage. It is a great coincidence that he got his courage because of Candy's actions, for he will need all the courage he can muster to keep his Lady safe~

I think that Candy has really stayed the same throughout the series. Malingo, however, has changed a lot. If Carrion isn't dead(!), He'll probably change quite a bit. The question is, in a good way or a bad way?

Candy's the main character, so her growth has to be very gradual. The real transformation probably will not happen until the final book. So she has grown, but not a lot. Mostly she's just become more confident with herself, more free, more happy... small things compared to the growth I feel she will eventually go through. Plus many of those things might be because of Boa. We haven't really seen anything yet.
The other characters' changes will happen a lot more quickly. Like Malingo shedding his battered slave personality in favor of his new, free geshrat personality. Because the story is not about him, and we don't see a lot of his inner feelings/thoughts, it's not as jarring if the change is quick.
