Hi, guys! Since The Lady of Midnight is going to be busy, she gave me permission to start this next discussion up.
BEGINS: FEB 4 (oops, got delayed 2 days) CHAPTER: 1 - Room Nineteen
I am posting this thread to make all aware that on Wed February 4, 2009 you all can begin discussing in this thread anything that has to do with the first chapter of the Abarat.
If any one discussion point comes up that seems really interesting and others want to go further it with it let me suggest the starter of the topic begin a new thread for it so it doesn't congest this thread. I can't wait to hear all the points you want to bring up that you liked, dislikes, thought was interesting or whatnot. Thanks.
NEXT WEEK: FEB 11 CHAPTER: 2 - What Henry Murkitt Left Behind

This chapter was short, and I didn't find much to discuss. Basically, here were a couple of random things I thought about while reading - For Minnesota, a population of 36,793 is pretty large. So if Clive Barker was trying to make Chickentown seem like a tiny middle-of-nowhere type place he failed pretty badly... hahaha Did it ever say how old Don and Ricky are? How old do you imagine they are? Also, I know we haven't heard about Murkitt's story yet, that's next chapter. But... I think his story is the saddest one in the whole books Poor guy...

Hm, I didn't find much to discuss in the first chapter either... I may think of something about it later, though. I imagined Don and Ricky to be no older than thirteen: Like one of them about ten, the other thirteen? Something like that.

Yeah, I asked because I was talking to one of my friends who imagined them to be like 5 or 6, but I always imagined them slightly older, too, like between 10-14 years old.

Wait i thought the brothers were twins... I think it says that somewhere in the chapter. I always pictured them like 11 or 12ish. Does it say how old they are later on? I feel like it does... but maybe I'm wrong.
Also yeah I always thought that the population size was funny. I mean its small to me being from L.A. but he couldn't have done a much smaller number I suppose if thats what he was going for. What was the human to chicken ratio? lol how many chickens are in chicken town? A dang huge amount I tell you what.
I really like the Melissa character. I'm sure why maybe because she seems so naturally real.
I looove the poem Morningtide. Its one of my favorites I think. I have like most of the poems in the books memorized actually. I'm such a dorkus.
I also love the description of the view out her window. The deflated pool - so good.

I always imagined Candy's brothers too be about 5 or seven, or at least old enough to out of Bill's way. If they were pretty young, then it gives Melissa a good reason for staying with Bill. A sort of sticking it out for the kids, kind of thing...

Someone wrote a short, but not very sweet, reply on my of my fics that said Don and Ricky are twins. I know the Lady of Midnight has already mentioned this, er theory? but having re-read the chapter again today, I can't find any mention of this? It's seriously bugging me, is it mentioned later on??
