Deaux-Deaux
Just out of curiosity. I've been saying "Do-do" like a Dodo bird, I guess... but my only friend IRL who has read Abarat says it like "dew-dew" and recently I heard someone saying it like "dukes-dukes" but with the "eau" sound from the word "beautiful".
Also, how do you pronounce Rojo? I figure it's probably pronounced with a hard J sound, but because I speak some Spanish, my brain is always trying to say it with an "h" sound... like "Ro-ho" (which means red).
And if there's any other pronunciations you guys wanted to ask about, I figure this would be a good place for everyone to ask.

For Deaux-Deaux:
In the audio version of Abarat, it's pronounced dough-dough. But then again, Jim Dale pronounced Hermione wrong at first, so...I'll just go with what I hear.
For Rojo:
The narrator in the audio version has the "j" in there.

I must check out this audio version. I say it like "Dukes-dukes" but with the 'eau' sound. Rojo also has a hard J.

I didn't even realize that there WAS an audio version! Is there audio for both of the books? I don't know that I would ever buy it, though, I like reading them myself.

Dunno, been skipping over the word Deaux Deaux. I can't even remember how I had it im my head now that I've been thinking about it. But Rojo with a 'J' for me.
You can download both Abarat books on Itunes, I have them on my Ipod. Excellent for long boring journeys when you can't be bothered to pack books. ;D

I've said it sort of like "Zoo-Zoox" but I'm probably very wrong

"Zux Zux", where the "u" is pronounced like "uh" as in when you are dumbfounded.

I say Zoo-Zoo....but there is that X on the end of the word, so it can't really be pronounced like I have it in my head.

True. I've been listening to the audio version, and Richard Ferrone pronounced things so much differently than my brother and I. How do ya'll pronounce Gorgossium? Rhyming with toss or ghost? And Diamanda. Die or dee? Very confusing. (Yes, I realize that in the long run it doesn't matter, but every time I hear him say Gorgossium the wrong way I get ticked off.)

Oh, and Scoriae. Score-ay or Score-e-ay?

Scoriae is a real word, it's pronounced "skor-e-e". As in you say a long e sound twice. I can't remember exactly what it is but it has to do with volcanoes/lava. I don't know if it's pronounced the same in Abarat, though I say Gorgossium like "Gore-ghos-ium" As in first part is like the word "gore" and middle is sort of like "ghost" but not as long... I don't know if that's right... Diamanda is also a real name. I only personally know one person, and she pronounces it "Dee-Amanda" so that's how I've always said it.

Another one: Abaratian. Is it Abaratian (-tia making a sh sound) or Abarat-ian?

On the Abarat website, you can click on a book and on the bottom it says you can listen to a chapter read by Clive himself. He pronounces Gorgossium and such in the second one, which is what I am listening to now.

I say Abaratian like "Hatian" or "Croatian" which is like... I guess similar to a "sh" sound I could be wrong though, and wouldn't that be funny

I've this theory that John Mischief, Deaux-Deaux, Candy, Kaspar Wolfswinkel, and the story in general are homages to past literary classics. Candy would be our Alice/Dorothy/Lucy. John M. is Mr. Tumnus and the lighthouse is the lamp post and wardrobe both. Deaux-Deaux is a reference to the Dodo bird during the causus race, so it is pronouced like Do-do. Kaspar Wolfswinkel is mad. He is permanently stuck at one place in time per his banishment to Ninnyhammer. And he wears a lot of hats... He's an evil mad hatter.
